Summer Bands International was an association of youth marching bands located in the western regions of the United States and Canada.  They had member bands from Southern and Northern California, Oregon, Wahington, Edmonton and Calgary, Canada, and Taipei, Taiwan.  They were trying to expand their membership to bands from all over the globe.  Youth bands are independant bands that are made up of students from more than one school.  Junior youth bands have members that range in age from 7 to 14 years, and senior youth bands have members that range from 13 through 21 years of age.  Member bands traveled to and hosted various events including parades, standstill competitions, exhibitions, and field show competitions.  At the end of each summer season the association sponsored a Championship that included events for soloists, small ensembles, and field show competition.  See the 1998 Season Review.

Many of the member bands of SBI hosted shows during the summer months and in addition, many SBI members participated in Drum Corps International - Pacific Division shows.  There was a Youth Band Class for competition in most of the DCI - Pacific Shows that are held in June and early July. See the SBI's list of proposed show dates for the summer of 1999. To get the complete schedule of DCI shows, visit the Drum Corps International web site. Unfortunately the membership fell on hard times during the winter or 1999 and the association ceased operations before the summer of 1999. This web site serves as a historical record of it's past accomplishments.

SBI Happenings!

We held a very productive meet on February 17th at Saint Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs.  Many new and interested unit directors were in attendence.  We voted to expand the performance styles that we would host at all SBI shows, creating divisions for the Division II/III and Senior drum corps, standstill classes for bands, drum lines and drill teams.  Preliminary show dates were also set and listed below.

This year we have opened all the SBI shows to performances and competition including Division II/III drum corps, stand-still division for youth bands, and various parade corps.  We are striving to include all aspects of the pageantry art form in our activities.  If you have a unit that is interested in performing, contact Harvey Berish of the World of Pageantry at (714) 952-2263 or harvey@worldofpageantry.com.

If you wish to add a new show date to our list, or make a change in a current listing, please contact our Webmaster by e-mail.

June '99 Update: It looks like many of the regular competing unit of SBI are having trouble recuiting members this year.  A problem that is getting worse in southern California due to overly busy school programs.  This has caused the cancelation of some of the originally scheduled shows.  Hopefully next year things will work out better for all the units.
